About Starway Work & Travel USA Program
Background and Benefits
Work & Travel USA is a program that helps US companies to meet their seasonal staffing needs, while enabling international students to experience the US first-hand as both employees and tourists. The Exchange Visitor Program is carried out pursuant to the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, as amended. Its purpose is to enhance understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges. Year after year overseas students continue to take advantage of this unique program that provides them with in-depth exposure to life in the US and the opportunity to work and travel.
All participants on the Work & Travel USA program are university students with strong English skills who are authorized to accept employment in the United States for up to 4 months during the period coinciding with the summer vacation in their home country.
The US summer season sees primarily European students arriving and staying for up to 4 months between mid-May to mid-October. The US winter season welcomes South Americans and South Africans who generally arrive between mid-November and early January, staying for up to four months.
Upon expiration of their 4-month visa, students are granted a 30-day travel period by the US government. Although they are no longer authorized to work, this period allows them to further explore the US before they return home to resume their studies
Advantages of hiring international workers:
Overseas workers can help to serve your customers better. Our participants have all been screened for their English ability. At the same, these students speak one, if not several, foreign languages and bring with them a global perspective often lacking in US college students. If your business caters to international customers, having workers with an expanded world-view can be a real plus.
The program can help you fully meet your peak season staffing needs. International students are often able to work a longer season than their US counterparts. In the summer, participants can arrive as early as mid-May and stay as late as mid-October (for a total of 4 months). Winter participants can arrive as early as mid-November and stay as late as mid-April.
Our participants are highly dedicated to their program and in turn their employers. The chance to work in the United States is often a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these participants, and the special nature of this work exchange often shows in the student’s enthusiasm and willingness to work.
Your US workforce will benefit from the experience as well. By working closely with international participants for several months each year, your American employees will learn about foreign cultures and gain a new perspective on their jobs by seeing things from a fresh perspective.
Starway comprehensive support services to both employers and participants alike. You may access our Support Team at any time before, during, and after your students’ stay for any assistance you might need.
